Welcome…

Welcome to NiKAD.net. Really this is my personal web site, I did want to start up my own business but never really found the right area, so rather than sitting round doing nothing this site now contains information about me (at least it is a subject I am reasonably knowledgable about – I hope!!)

NAS Website

In November 2011 I contacted the owner of the naswebsite.com website as I needed some information about my Thecus NAS but the site had become vandalised with SPAM. Unfortunatly the site was taken off-line. In January 2012 I spoke to the owner again and agreed to take the site off his hands to continue providing the information about NASes, and the transfer was agreed.

The first business was to tidy up the site and remove all the SPAM vandelism, but with MediaWiki this is no simple task. I ended up having to export the pages from 2 different sites, then importing them into the new site, but this has had the effect of loosing historical revisions.

Next I need to send a message to all the original authors and see if I can entice them to come back and edit the wiki???

I have also created a new website called NiKAD Apps where I intend to publish any applications that I have. Please take a look and tell me if you like them!!

Finally things have not been going too well with my girlfriend recently, but hopefully they will pick up soon, and I will try to be a better person!!! (Love you beautiful xxXxx)

10 minutes tunnel time

Well last night was my second visit to AirKix and between me and Dave we had 20 minutes of flight. We split it 10 minutes each so we could both continue our 10 point training (move left/right/up/down etc.) Unfortunatly I still have 3 to go as I have a habit of twisting my spine :( – Dave managed to get all 10 points though he doesn’t feel too stable! Still I want to go again and am looking for anyone who fancies it…!

I easily managed to go up and down, and to turn left and right – still need to do more though!

Where am I going?

I guess this is a question that everyone asks themselves at some time in their life, where is my life going, what am I doing here, how did my life turn out this way etc. etc. but recently I was honoured enough to see the Kwahadi Dancing Scout Troop on their European Tour, and now their tour has finished I decided to revisit their European Tour blog.

The first thing I noticed is that their blog points out all those things I take for granted. back in 2007 I went to the Gilwel Reunion (a Scout Leaders function at the UK Scout Headquarters on the edge of Epping forrest) and took two friends with me. We stayed an extra day and I took them on a tour round London. On the London Eye(not something I wanted to do but something I did not regret!), to Buckingham Palace to watch the changing of the guard, up to Covent Garden and then down the road to the Freemasons Hall on Queen Street. We also called at the Tower of London but being late in the day we only looked at it from the outside and I had the idea that at next years reunion we could revisit the tower as London isn’t that far from Manchester! Of course for one reason or another I didn’t go to the reunion last year, and I am going to miss it again this year! But the fact that it is a few hours drive to get to makes it such an unimportant place to visit. Is this really the way I should feel about the history of my country? What if I am unable to travel this time next year?

The next thing I noticed from the Kwahadi blog was the emotion it invoked in me. The show was impressive although in the second half the explanation seemed longer than the dancing (this could have been to give the dancers the time to change/get prepared), but the amount of time that has gone into the costumes and the training for the dancing to make such an impressive show shows the dedication of those membersbut I guess the reward is fun that all the members must have ‘behind the scenes’and the knowledge that they have entertained thousands of people in the UK and many times more in the USA.

So why I have I entitled this blog entry “Where am I going?” well I guess it is a review of all those things I would like to have done and have not yet (that’s not to say I won’t just that I have not yet and given the right circumstances I possibly will), my future is not yet determined and neither is (I imagine) 95% of the worlds population!

Things I would like to have done:

  • Volunteered with the RNLI – I think the work that these guys do is incredible! Considering they are unpaid and have to do a normal day job whilst being on call shows their commitment to saving lives, I know the Fire and Ambulance services do a great job but at least they get paid for their trouble!
  • Volunteered with the Mountain Rescue – again I think these guys are incredible! They give their time to find strays and the injured in some of the most inhospitable places in the UK and often when the weather is at its worst!
  • Visit with the Kwahadi dancers, and meet with a native Indian tribe (is that the correct word?) and learn a little about their way of life and history though I fear I would have little to offer them in return as a thank you for their hospitality (unless they need help with computers…)
  • Visiting some of the most impressive monuments and historical landmarks in the UK – I have been to a few castles and monuments in England, Scotland and Wales, but I would like to see such as the Tower of London and Stone Henge and learn a little about our past (something I didn’t seem that keen on doing when I was young!!)

Why nikad.net?

I never get asked why I use the domain nikad.net but I might as well explain just in case a collegue or friend eventually wants to find out.

Back in my school days (in the ’80s) I had a friend called Nick, I don’t really talk to him these days but that is because I moved out of the area! Even back then I thought about starting a company and at one point I puzzled over what to call it. Eventually I came up with a combination of the two names Nick and KAD which ended up being truncated to NiKAD (hence the odd capitalisation).

This name stuck and was even my prefered name for the first batch of white wine I produced until my father thought KABill sounded better (ugh! The things you have to put up from your parents!!)

Eventually after I left University and had been working for a few years in the IT industry I decided to get a domain – nikad seemed a natural progression but as nikad.com was taken (and I was not a company so nikad.co.uk was out the window) I plumped for nikad.net, and now the name has stuck. I don’t intend to change my domain as I don’t want to have to give out a new email address to everyone but needles to say I have now also branched out to have nikad.mobi and nikad.tel. Both of these domains are experimantal so do not expect any good content on them, though the .tel domain does have my personal data you will need to become a telfriends friend to see it!

KPS

I currently work for a company called Knowledge Powered Solutions in Daresbury, Cheshire, as a software engineer. We are currently working on version 4.0 of our search engine which is due for release imminently. The search engine is a neural net based search engine used mainly for support desks, integrating with web sites and integrating with third party applications.

My job title is Seniour Software Engineer but I also have responsibilities for looking after servers, including Linux and Windows servers, and testing.
